Extractions
We always prioritize saving your natural teeth whenever possible. However, there are cases where a tooth extraction is the best option to relieve pain, prevent infection, or prepare for other dental treatments.
Restore your smile with extraction
Why would a tooth need to be extracted?
There are several reasons why an extraction may be necessary, including:
Severe tooth decay that cannot be restored with a filling or crown.
Advanced gum disease that has weakened the supporting bone.
A broken tooth that cannot be repaired.
Poor positioning (such as impacted wisdom teeth).
Overcrowding in preparation for orthodontic treatment.
Removing a tooth is never our first choice, but when it becomes necessary, we ensure a smooth and comfortable procedure.
What happens during a tooth extraction?
Before extracting a tooth, we will numb the area with a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. You may feel pressure as the tooth is gently loosened and removed, but you should not experience pain. If at any point you do feel discomfort, let us know immediately so we can make adjustments.
In some cases, a tooth may need to be sectioned—this means dividing it into smaller pieces for easier removal. This is common for teeth with curved roots or those that are deeply embedded in the jawbone.
What to expect after a tooth extraction
Healing properly after an extraction is essential to prevent complications. Here’s what to do:
Control bleeding – Bite down on a gauze pad for 30–45 minutes to allow a clot to form. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and apply pressure again.
Protect the blood clot – Avoid rinsing vigorously, using straws, smoking, or drinking alcohol for at least 72 hours. These actions can dislodge the clot and delay healing.
Reduce swelling – Apply an ice pack to the affected area for 15-minute intervals during the first 24 hours.
Manage pain – Take pain medication as prescribed and follow dosage instructions. If discomfort persists, contact us.
Eat soft foods – Stick to a diet of soft, nutritious foods and avoid chewing on the extraction site.
Resume oral hygiene – After 24 hours, gently brush and floss while avoiding the extraction area to keep your mouth clean.
Most patients feel back to normal within a few days, but if you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, or swelling beyond 2–3 days, call our office right away.
Considering a tooth replacement?
Losing a tooth can impact your ability to chew, speak, and maintain proper alignment. If you need an extraction, we can discuss options for replacing the missing tooth, including dental implants, bridges, or dentures to restore function and aesthetics.
